The Siddha Yoga Ashram in Oakland is a sacred gathering place for seekers of all ages to participate in the Siddha Yoga practices. Gurumayi Chidvilasananda gave the name Taruna Poshana to the department that oversees Siddha Yoga teaching and learning events for children, young people, and families around the world. The literal translation of this term is “nurturing the youthful spirit.”

Siddha Yoga Teaching and Learning Events for Young People

Satsangs and Retreats for Young People

Young People at the Siddha Yoga Ashram in Oakland Satsang
  • In Siddha Yoga Satsangs for Young People, seekers ages 13-24 gather for the purpose of learning about the practices of chanting, meditation, seva, and dakshina, and to study scriptural teachings. Satsangs are usually one-and-a-half hours in length. See the calendar below for dates.

  • Siddha Yoga Retreats for Young People are events which last for two days.

    • Each retreat provides an opportunity for seekers ages 13-30 to immerse themselves in the practices of meditation, chanting, seva, and dakshina.

      • During the retreat, young people study a Siddha Yoga teaching and learn ways to implement this teaching in their daily lives.

      • Young adults from across the globe travel to the Siddha Yoga Ashram in Oakland to participate in a Siddha Yoga Retreat for Young People.

    • The retreat for young people in November focuses on the Siddha Yoga Shaktipat Intensive.

      • The Siddha Yoga Shaktipat Intensive is the primary vehicle through which Gurumayi Chidvilasananda bestows shaktipat diksha, spiritual initiation, by awakening the kundalini energy.

      • Teenagers 13 - 17 years of age who are interested in participating in their first Siddha Yoga Shaktipat Intensive, please contact the Taruna Poshana Department at Families@syaoakland.org before registering for the Intensive.

Young people are welcome to attend all Siddha Yoga events at the Siddha Yoga Ashram in Oakland. Throughout the year, there are local and global teaching and learning events and retreats including:

 

 

Siddha Yoga Chanting

  • Svadhyaya: The meaning of this word is the "study of the Self." It is the regular, disciplined practice of chanting and reciting scriptural texts such as Shri Guru Gita.

  • Namasankirtana is repetition of the divine name in song.

 The Siddha Yoga terms for each age group are:

  • Shishu (birth to 5 years)

    • Shishu is a Sanskrit word for "one who is beginning to learn."

  • Bala (6 to 9 years)

    • Bala is a Sanskrit word for "young child."

  • Kumar (10 to 12 years)

    • Kumar is a Sanskrit word for "a royal child with spiritual wealth."

  • Kishor (13 to 17 years)

    • Kishor is a Sanskrit word for "young, strong, and dynamic."

  • Yuva (18 to 24 years)

    • Yuva is the Sanskrit word for "young adult."
